ERIE, Ill. — Howard Carl Neese I, 90, of Erie, IL, died Friday, March 29, 2013, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the First Baptist Church, Erie, with the Rev. Dick Adams and Pastor Robert Bratcher officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Erie, with the Erie Masonic Lodge service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Erie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Erie.

Carl was born July 9, 1922, in Pearl, IL, the son of William Thomas Neese and Hazel Hall Neese. He married E. Haroldine Crowder on July 30, 1944, in Pleasant Hill, IL. She died December 19, 1995. He then married Joy Raines Shepherd on October 5, 1997, in Erie.

Carl graduated from Nebo High School and then went on to graduate from the University of Illinois in 1948. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving as a pilot during the war. He was a Mason of 61 years and was a 32nd degree. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion, past member of Rotary, and had served on the City Council of Erie. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and held many offices of which some were moderator, treasurer, deacon and was a contributing part of reconstructing the front entrance of the church.

Carl was a farm advisor for Whiteside County Farm Bureau and then went on to be an insurance agent with Country Companies for over 37 years and became an independent agent with his son-in-law and son in 1985, retiring after 20 years. He also managed farm estates. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, shooting trap and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Joy; daughter, Darsia Kimball and her husband, Ronald, of Erie; son, Howard and his wife, Ranae, of Fulton; stepdaughter, Pam Tiemann and her husband, Adam, of Erie; stepson, William and his wife, Charlotte, of Fenton; granddaughters, Amy (Mark) Wilming, Eldridge, IA, Heidi (Anthony) Finn, Kewanee; two stepgranddaughters, Halie Tiemann, South Carolina, and Hope Tiemann, Erie; two stepgrandsons, Wyatt and Carter Shepherd; one stepgreat-grandson, Andrew Wilming; and two great- grandsons, Michael Wilming and Tyler Finn. He is also survived by one sister, Anna Beryl Turner; sister-in-law, Neta Neese; sister-in-law, Donna June and her husband, Thomas Hobbs; and brothers-in-law, Tommy Crowder and Wayne Yelton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Lyndle and Lucille Neese; brother, Lowell Neese; sister and brother-in-law, Vera and Ed Hoover; brother-in-law, Cecil Turner; sisters-in-law, Jean Crowder, Gloria Yelton, Bettye Capps; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, May and Harold Crowder.
