Baseball and the YMCA have been a big part of Bob’s life. Born and raised in Clinton, Bob has been around Clinton YMCA since the age of 10. Bob recalls the Bill Sims era at the YMCA and has fond memories of his involvement with the Y’s Mens Club. “We were the first service club to have a booth at Riverboat Days and we featured the famous Y burger”, Bob said. The club also sold Christmas trees as a fundraiser. Bob was in charge of the YMCA membership drive that was held for years and performed many costumed skits as part of the kick off program. I guess you could say the YMCA played a big part in his life.
Baseball also had a big influence on Bob’s life. If major league baseball had as many farm clubs as they do today, Bob might have had the chance to play for the Chicago White Sox.
He spent about 6 weeks trying out for the White Sox as short stop in 1945. He played ball with the Clinton Industrial League in the 1940’s. He was one of six managers of Clinton’s first little league baseball for 6 years. Bob also was a bat boy for the Clinton Demons in the Independent League in the 1930s.
