ERIE, Ill. — Lorraine M. Verkruysse, 91, a longtime resident of Erie, IL, and Clinton, IA, died Thursday, November 21, 2013, surrounded by her children at Mercy Hospital, Hospice Care, Iowa City, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, Nov. 25th at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Erie. Visitation will be from 2 – 5 PM Sunday at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie, with a time for sharing memories beginning at 4:00 PM. Private burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Fulton, IL. The memorial fund will be shared among her favorite charities.
Lorraine Mary Chamberlain was born Feb. 7, 1922 in Newton Township, rural Whiteside County, Illinois, the eldest daughter of George and Rosella (O’Neil) Chamberlain. She was united in marriage to Kenneth P. Verkruysse in 1943.
Lorraine always strived to draw nearer to God and was an avid seeker of knowledge. She loved to read and excelled in school, skipping a grade at Sandytown Country School, rural Erie. She was a 1939 graduate of Erie High School. Lorraine was proud to be Irish and loved horses. She often rode her horse to school as a young child. Lorraine had been employed at Inter-national Harvester during WWII, Shaheen’s Dry Goods and retired from G.E. in Morrison, IL, after 25 years.
Lorraine is survived by her son, R. Kent (Diana) Verkruysse, Prophetstown, IL; 3 daughters, Yvonne Mayer, Tulsa, OK, Kathleen (Ken) Bott, Clinton, IA, Michelle (Leonard) Watkins, Iowa City, IA; nine grandchildren, Pat Mayer, Matt (Barb) Mayer, Jacque (Keith) Medenblik, Dianne (Scott) Sibley, Alex Verkruysse, Stacey (Jeff) Detra, Brad (Nikki) Kaup, Ryan Kaup, and Monica Smith; and ten great grandchildren; brother, James “Gene” (Dorothy) Chamberlain, Albany, IL and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leo, Howard and Clyde Chamberlain; sisters, Dorothy Schroeder and Isabel Hood; and son-in-law, Thomas Mayer.
