James Edward Determan Sr.

James Edward Determan Sr. passed away peacefully at Bickford Cottage, Davenport on Saturday, March 31 2007.

Jim Determan was the 2nd of 10 children, and oldest son of Ed and Lottie Determan, born April 11, 1927. At age 14 he left Sugar Creek Catholic School to run the family farm. He was drafted in the US Army and served his country in the Korean conflict, attaining the rank of staff sergeant while serving with the 1st Armored Division, and was awarded a Combat Infantryman’s Badge. After leaving the service, he married the love of his life, Annabeth McDonald on August 1, 1953 at St. Joseph Catholic church in Preston Iowa. Jim and Annabeth were married for nearly 49 years.

Jim farmed in Charlotte, Delmar and Bryant. He worked as a machinist helper for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 24 years, retiring in 1993. Jim was a member of the Charlotte American Legion and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bryant, Iowa. His hobbies included following his grand children’s activities. A voracious reader of books and newspapers, he was passionate about current events. He had a life long fascination with planes, trains and automobiles, and he loved riding around the countryside checking the crops. He enjoyed traveling the country and different parts of the world visiting his children.

He is survived by eight children: Margie(Ed) Determan-Rotberg Nevada City CA, Pat (Craig) Jepsen, Long Grove, IA, Ron (Deb) Determan, San Diego CA, Peg (Lance Balk) Determan Lake Forest IL, Diane (Ron Bierma) Determan, Chicago IL, James (Carolina) Determan, Houston TX (and Basra, Iraq), Paul (Sue) Determan, Clinton IA, and Steve Determan, Davenport, IA.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Gabe Rotberg, Theresa Jepsen, Michael Jepsen, fiancé Emily Meyer, Megan (Jeremy) Brotherton, Brian Determan, Laura Determan, Nate Balk, Thomas Balk, Henry Balk, Anna Bierma, Maggie Bierma, Katie Determan, Jake Determan, Emily Determan and by siblings Dorthy Goettsch, DeWitt, Camilla Sarevelli, North Carolina, Mary Jo ( Claire) Droessler, Colorado, Dick (Mary) Determan Bryant Iowa, and Janet Driscoll Arizona. In addition, brother and sister-in-laws Frank Riether Colorado, Dick Pray Pennsylvania, Donna Determan, DeWitt, and John McDonald and James McDonald Preston, Iowa.
