MAQUOKETA — Joan E. Turney, 85, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 19, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

Joan Elaine Lamoreaux was born on November 19, 1927 in Lanark, Illinois to Ralph and Helen (Flickinger) Lamoreaux. She graduated from Lanark High School in 1945. She married Edgar Turney on December 9, 1953 in Lanark, Illinois where they began their married life.

Joan worked at the Savanna Army Depot and Wagner Printing in Freeport, Illinois. In 1961, Ed and Joan moved to Maquoketa, Iowa where they owned and operated a milk trucking company. Joan eventually worked for Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa, retiring after 23 years of service in 1999.

Joan was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. She enjoyed reading and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs. She was a dedicated grandmother who was always involved with their activities. She loved her granddog, Kinnick, and always saw the best in everyone she met.

Those left to honor Joan’s memory include her husband of 59 years, Ed Turney; children, Jeff (Cindy) Turney of Maquoketa, IA, Paula Dever (Ted) Van Patten of Goose Lake, IA, and Larry Meyer of Rock Falls, IL; 6 grandchildren, Luke, Jake and Carlie Dever, Jordan Turney, Amber and Larry Meyer; 3 step-grandchildren, Ted, Cameron and Sara Van Patten; and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Kallenberger Harter.

The entire family would like to give special thanks to Hospice of Jackson County.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Joan E. Turney memorial fund has been established.
