DAVENPORT — Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for James F. Grothusen, 89, a resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, downtown Davenport, Iowa. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, IL. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #26. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. There will be a prayer service offered at 4:00 p.m. to begin the visitation.
James passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport.
James Francis Grothusen was born on September 19, 1923 in Rock Island, IL, a son of Hugo J. and Henrietta M. (Engelmann) Grothusen. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School, Rock Island and earned a B.S. in Commerce at St. Ambrose College.
James served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1944. He was a pilot on a B-29 in Saipan and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. He married Rosemary Verhelst on June 10, 1944 in Pampa, TX. She preceded him in death on July 3, 1982.
He married Jean Marie Ross on March 26, 1983. She preceded him in death on January 14, 2002. He wed his current wife, Patricia A. (De Bo) Hollembaek on June 26, 2006 in Glendora, California.
James was a Vice President Commercial Loan Officer for Davenport Bank and Trust Company, retiring in 1987. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport, St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church, Glendora CA., and the St. Ambrose President’s Club.
Additional memberships included the American Legion Post #26, Plus 60, St. Ambrose Athletic Bee’s Backer and a 46-year membership with the Elks. He enjoyed golf and fishing and was a referee for many years, officiating at high school and college basketball and football games for over 52 years. James was also an avid Cubs, Hawkeye and Bears fan.
