PRESTON — Frank John Trenkamp was loyal, honest, loving, and giving to his family, community and country. At the age of 96 he went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa, Iowa.
Frank was born January 17, 1917 in Preston, the son of Henry and Christina (Banowetz) Trenkamp. He attended the Sugar Creek Country School. From 1941 to 1946 he served his country in the 34th Red Bull Division, 168th Infantry, Company G — United States Army. Frank was a Purple Heart recipient in 1944. He served in Ireland, Scotland, Africa, Italy and France.
After returning home, Frank married Lillian Michel on September 30, 1947 in Springbrook, Iowa. They celebrated almost forty years of marriage and enjoyed traveling, including trips to The Holy Land and China. Lillian passed away on February 26, 1987.
Frank owned and operated the F. J. Trenkamp Quarry from 1946 until his retirement in 1980. He enjoyed woodworking, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Preston American Legion, AMVETS, Preston Telephone Board, Preston School Board, and the Preston Volunteer Fire Department.
Frank is lovingly remembered by four sons, Roger (Sherry) Trenkamp of Preston, Dwain (Judi) Trenkamp of Maquoketa, Randy (Bobbie) Trenkamp of Hannabal, Missourri, Patrick “Oats” (Peggy) Trenkamp of Preston; one daughter, Peggy (Brian) Schaefer of Davenport, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; one sister, Margaret Roling of Preston; four brothers, Bernard Trenkamp of Preston, Edward (Lillian) Trenkamp of Preston; Leo Trenkamp of Preston and Ray (Velma) Trenkamp of Preston.
Frank is preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; one daughter, Carol; one son, Dennis Trenkamp; a daughter in-law, Linda Trenkamp; seven brothers, Henry, Joseph, John “Jack, August, Angel, Bill and Jim; six sisters, Eva Knudsen, Kate Henningsen, Caroline Empen, Marie Feller, Wilhemina Feller, and Teresa Bachman; and his parents.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston with Father Don Hertges as Celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with full military rites accorded by the Preston American Legion. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013 at the church and one hour prior to the Mass. Friends and family are invited to share Frank’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
