STURGEON BAY, Wis. — David Owen McCoy, Sr., 85, of Sturgeon Bay, WI, died Saturday, January 11, 2014, at home with family and friends at his side after a battle with cancer.

He was born April 12, 1928 in Colfax, IL, the son of the late Lewie and Neva (Milner) McCoy. David attended Pleasant Hill School in Erie, IL. He worked for Clinton Foods, later Nabisco Foods and ADM Midland in the company power plant for 35 years, retiring in 1985. David also built and remodeled homes for over 50 years.

On September 25, 1949, he married Sarah Elizabeth Ward in Clinton, IA. After 54 years of marriage, Sarah preceded David in death in October 2003. David was also preceded in death by his sisters, Vivian Andresen and Evelyn Thulen.

David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. David enjoyed woodworking and all aspects of home construction, skills which were self-taught. He was an avid student. Throughout his life, well into his 80s, he was selfless when it came to generously spending time and energy to work on the homes of his family, friends, and neighbors.

David derived immense joy from working with his hands and problem solving, nothing better than a project well done. After retirement David added to his interests walking the beaches of Florida, collecting numerous shells. David taught everyone the importance of smiling through a difficult situation and to never give up. David will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

David was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Sturgeon Bay, WI North Congregation. David enjoyed devoting much of his time in public bible education because of his sincere love of people.

Survivors include his son, David (Julie) McCoy, Jr., of Goose Lake, IA; daughter, Susan McCoy of Iowa City, IA; two grandchildren, Lindsey (Harvey) Jack, Ryan D. McCoy; one great-grandchild, Colin Jack; his Sturgeon Bay, WI family, Chere’re (Kevin) Sullivan, and Jannean (Fred) Koller.
