The former Dorothy Shinners was born on March 20, 1927 in Davenport, to John and Ida Shinners. She married Harley Phillips in June 1946; he was killed in a racing accident in September 1946. In September of 1947 she married his best friend, and hers, Clarence Moughler. He died in May of 2011.

She was a member of the Northwest Davenport Liedertafel Ladies Club, Northwest Turners Auxiliary and the Putnam Museum Guild. She was past President of the Postal Carriers Ladies Auxiliary #129.

She was very proud of the fact that she was a wife, a homemaker and mother before anything else. She worked part time at Dutch Mill candies as their manager and at Candles and Stuff until Clarence retired. They started wintering in Taveres, Florida at that time and met and made many new friends. She enjoyed bird watching, reading, listening to music, watching old time movies, crocheting and knitting dish cloths. She has made each child, grandchild and great-grandchild their own afghan. Her crocheted dish cloths were always a welcome treat she gave to family and friends. She had a great love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit and her love for animals.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for all the kind and loving care Dorothy has received over the years from all her wonderful doctors and the staff at Ridgecrest Village, Compassus Hospice staff and the staff at the Good Samaritan.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra of DeWitt, and her 3 sons, Richard (Lori) and Steven (Christy) both of Davenport, Gary of Muscatine, her grandchildren, Jason and Michelle Gold of Dallas City, IL, Jon and Michelle Gold Smith of Eagan, MN and Andrew Antle, Davenport, her five great-grandchildren, four nieces, nine nephews and her very best friend of over 50-plus years, Shirley Whitbeck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Mary Susan, her four brothers, Charles, Richard, Ed and Raymond Shinners.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, Camp Courageous or Ridgecrest Village.
