MUSCATINE — Phyllis Jean Hoffman, 77, of Muscatine, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church. Reverend Steven Cauley and Associate Cheryl Hollich will officiate. Honorary bearers will be Barb Smith, Jason Dornbush, Justin Dornbush, Jacob Dornbush, Rosendo Ramos, and Allen Ball. A time of food and fellowship will be held immediately following the service at the church. Private inurnment will take place in Zion Lutheran Church Columbarium.
Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Zion Lutheran scholarship fund or in care of the family. Online condolences www.wittichfuneralhome.com.
Phyllis was born on October 11, 1935, in Clinton, the daughter of Alvin G. and Marie Jensen Melchert. She graduated from Clinton High School.
She married Charles “Chuck” L. Hoffman on May 8, 1955, in Clinton. She moved to Muscatine with her husband in 1985, and lived there for 28 years.
Phyllis was very strong in her faith and an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. At Zion, she was a past President of Women of the Church, an active member of the Group 5 Women’s Circle, counted weekly offerings, and helped re-establish and run the annual sauerkraut supper. She also volunteered at the gift shop at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.
She was loved and will be deeply missed by her husband, Charles L. Hoffman; a son, Rodney C. Hoffman and wife, Barb A. Smith, from Evergreen, Colorado; a daughter, Stacey J. Ramos and husband, Rosendo, from Muscatine; four grandchildren, Jason, Justin, and Jacob Dornbush, and Katherine Harris, all from Muscatine; and by one brother, Ron Melchert of Clinton.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Joanne Bigwood.
