Howard Jacobs

Aug. 20, 1934 - Sept. 10, 2013

DEWITT — Howard Jacobs, 79, of rural DeWitt, Iowa, died at home Tuesday morning, September 10, 2013.

Howard Everett Jacobs was born August 20, 1934, to Ellen (Vetter) and Everett Jacobs at his parent’s home in rural Grand Mound, Iowa.

He graduated from Grand Mound High School in 1952. Howard served in the Army from 1956 until 1958. Howard was united in marriage to Marjorie Vaughn on July 29, 1956, at the First Congregational Church, Clinton Iowa.

After being discharged from the Army, he began farming until the late 1970s. Howard worked for Pride Seed Corn Co. the majority of his adult life, retiring in 1996. He continued working for Northrup King (Syngenta) seasonally for many years to follow. The highlight of his career was the 2 months he spent in Chile, teaching local farmers how to plant seed corn.

Howard was a life-long member at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, serving as an elder and trustee. After retirement, he was a member at Wapsi Oaks Country Club and enjoyed playing golf there and in charity events.

When Howard wasn’t using his woodworking talents creating beautiful items for his church, family, and friends, he was cheering for his beloved Cubs. Howard was a devoted grandpa to Adam, Cory, Ben, Cassie, Garrett, and Olivia Jacobs, and Gerald Burkholder, attending all of their events.

In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Margie, Howard is survived by his children, Mike (Jeanne) Jacobs of Grand Mound, Mark (Linda) Jacobs of DeWitt, Dawn Jacobs of DeWitt, Steve (JoAnn) Jacobs of DeWitt, Lisa Jacobs of Grand Mound, and Linda Jacobs of Grand Mound; his grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Jean) Jacobs; sisters, Esther (Alan) Petersen, Marolyn (Bob) Long, and Nancy (Ed) Math; a sister-in-law, Andrea (Hal) Shelton; nieces and nephews.
