Harold Wilt

THOMSON, Ill. — Harold “Bud” Wilt died after a short illness at Methodist Hospital in Peoria, Illinois on September 10, 2013.

He was born in Thomson, Illinois on February 20, 1928 to Virgil and Vada (Groharing) Wilt. Bud married Janis L’hommedieu on December 27, 1951 in Savanna, Illinois.

Bud served our country from 1946 to 1948 in the United States Coast Guard. He was stationed aboard an 80-foot wooden cutter in Hawaii. Bud was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. He retired from the Milwaukee/Soo Railroad in 1986 and ran Bud’s Repair in Savanna and Thomson for many years. He built a houseboat in Thomson, which provided many happy memories, until it was sold in 1964. Bud bought another houseboat in the 1980’s with an inboard motor that only he could keep running.

He was a member and President of the Board of The First Savanna Savings Bank for many years. Bud was an avid golfer, an excellent woodworker, and an amazing overall fix it man. He would do anything for anyone who asked (or didn’t) and loved mentoring younger people. He enjoyed riding his bike and enjoying nature. Most of all he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and ‘very special’ friend to many, many people.

Bud is survived by his wife Janis; his children, Deana (Mathew) Timm, Robert Wilt and Rodney (Michelle) Wilt; four grandchildren, Morgan and Michael Timm, and Ryan and Haley Wilt; two sisters, Joann (Wilt) Gaskamp and Nancy (Wilt) Pierson and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Everett and his sister Betty Lou (Wilt) Stagg.

A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Sat., October 12, 2013 at the Community United Church of Christ in Savanna. Visitation will be held 10 – 11:00 a.m. Sat., October 12, 2013, an hour prior to the Service . Memorials may be made to the Savanna Historical Society at 406 Main Street in Savanna or to the Community Church in Savanna.
