CLINTON — William T. “Ripper” Collins, age 77, of Clinton, died Tuesday Sept. 24, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28th, at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Saturday 9:00 a.m. until the service hour at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery, Clinton, where military honors will be conducted by the Clinton AMVETS. Memorials may be given to Clinton Community College and AMVETS.

William was born on Aug. 6, 1936 in Clinton, IA, the son of Raymond and Margaret (Starck) Collins. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955.

He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1959-1961. He owned and operated a barber shop on Second Street in Clinton for over 30 years and was the Clinton County Commissioner of Veteran Affairs.

William was past state president of the Association of County Commissions of Veterans Affairs and is a national service officer with the association. He was a member of the AMVETS and Honorary Citizen of Boys Town.

He enjoyed golfing, playing pool, and collecting sports memorabilia. He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago White Sox fan. He also was a play-by-play broadcaster for the local baseball, basketball, and football games for over 17 years and was the “Voice of the Irish” for over 14 years.

William is survived by his two sons, David A. (Rene) Collins of Iowa City, IA and Thomas P. Collins of Dubuque, IA; two grandchildren, Colton and Max; and three nieces, Billie Giese, Cindy Dunham, and Vicki Tieso; and a nephew, Joe Tieso.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a sister, and a nephew.
