---- — PORT BYRON, Ill. — Thomas Richard Spier, 71, of Port Byron, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa.
Memorial services to celebrate his life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church with burial in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Princeton, IA, at a later date. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
Tom was born March 21, 1942, in Clinton, IA, the son of Richard and Bernice (Thomas) Spier. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1960. He attended trade school in preparation for his career as a sheet metal worker. Tom married Janis Nehring on June 29, 1974 in Galesville, WI. He was employed as a sheet metal worker for Johnson Contracting, from where he retired on December 31, 1999.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Princeton, IA, where he was deeply involved with building projects and maintenance of the church property. Tom always had a project to work on and was always ready to help someone else with theirs. He enjoyed his poker group of Zion Lutheran Church buddies, traveling and NASCAR. Tom had a great sense of humor, was quick witted and very genuine. He was loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, Port Byron; children and spouses, Brent Spier, Seelyville, IN, Bryan (Sue) Spier, Rockford, MI, Heather (Lupe) Salas, Lockhart, TX, Courtney Spier, Port Byron; siblings, Carole Shannon, Lancaster, PA, Rick (Dana) Spier, Clinton, IA, Mike (Holly) Spier, Shaftsbury, VT; grandchildren, Chase, Caitlin, Luke, Tom, Christy, Jim, Cameron, Cura, and Stella (to be born); uncle & aunt, Don & Dorothy Thomas, Peoria; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Irvin & Nancy Nehring, Emily & Tom Ustchig, Ruth & Chris Koehn; mother-in-law, Nona Nehring, Trempealeau, WI, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Jim Nehring.
