ALBANY, Ill. — Donald L. “Duke” Abbott, 81, of Albany, died Thursday, October 31, 2013 at his home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at the Albany United Methodist Church – Albany, with the Rev. William Owen, retired pastor of United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm. Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Private family interment will be in Clinton.

Memorials have been established.

He was born Jan. 13, 1932 in Whiteside County, Ill., to LaCleive and Gertrude (Housenga) Abbott. Duke attended Clinton schools in Clinton and graduated in 1949. He married Lois Ann Rigby on Dec. 22, 1951, at Camp LeJeune, N.C. She died Aug. 24, 2009.

He served in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean War.

Duke worked at E.I. DuPont, Clinton, for 37 years. In addition to E.I. DuPont, Duke owned and operated a dry wall business.

Duke was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton, and current member of the Albany United Methodist Church, serving both churches in many capacities. Duke enjoyed his vacations in Estes Park, Co. Duke enjoyed hunting behind his Brittany Spaniels, fishing the Mississippi River and crossword puzzles. Our dad loved his grandchildren and was a caregiver. Duke provided a home to anyone in need, whether it was to a stranded Japanese businessman or a family member that needed a place to stay. Duke cared for his wife, Lois, at home, during her decade long battle with dementia.

Survivors include two daughters, Mindy (Rex) Stratton of Clinton, Rebecca (Ron) Wells, Overland Park, KS; two sons, Michael (Claudia) Abbott of Clinton, and Timothy (Tracey) Abbott of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Neal (Anita) Abbott of Clinton; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Abbott of Camanche; many nieces and nephews; special friends, Margaret Naftzger and Doris and Delores Rus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Ann; a sister, and two brothers
