Each month members of the community are featured highlighting the YWCA. This month, Jim Bengston shares information about the Clinton Half Marathon and Family Wellness Fest. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the YWCA and the Mercy Healthcare Foundation.
A group of local marathoners, triathletes, and fitness enthusiasts, led by Dr. Brian Peck, will host the inaugural Clinton Half Marathon and Family Wellness Fest on Saturday in Clinton. Offering the choice of a half marathon, 10k, 5k, four-person volleyball tournament, two-person bags tournament, family wellness fest, and kid’s activities, this event will have something for everyone. The entire event is aimed at promoting health and wellness in the Clinton community.
All three races will begin next to Alliant Energy Field. The half marathon and 10k are scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. while the 5k is set to start at 7:40 a.m. The four-person volleyball and two-person bags tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m., inside Alliant Energy Field.
Event organizers look to draw people from throughout the entire Midwest to Clinton.
“The course will be challenging and rewarding all in one,” Peck said.
Challenging indeed as the half marathon route will include several rolling hills and a pass through beautiful Eagle Point Park. However, runners will be rewarded by abundant hospitality and a run alongside the mighty Mississippi River and half marathoners will have the opportunity to see the widest part of the river while running through Eagle Point.
“This event is sure to strike the interest of runners from throughout the region,” Peck said.
Currently, more than 50 percent of the registered participants are from outside of the Clinton, Camanche and Fulton, Ill., area. The economic impact this event will have on the Gateway area is tremendous. The event organizers urge citizens to show their pride in their city and provide out-of-towners a good, clean view of this beautiful city.
The Clinton Half Marathon and Family Wellness Fest has taken the idea of providing a quality road running race and coupling it with a complete day for fitness, wellness education and family fun.
The volleyball and bags tournaments, two leisure activities enjoyed by many in the area, are rolled into a competitive format sure to provide excitement for all.
“We wanted to go above and beyond the normal half marathon, and provide a little something for everyone,” Jennifer Naeve, executive committee member, said.
The first place volleyball and bags teams will receive $150 in River City Gold and the second place teams will receive $75 in River City Gold. Free kid’s activities will include Jumpy House, Kid’s Fun Run at 10:30 a.m., Obstacle Fit Course, and Face Painting. Wellness vendors will also be showcasing products and services throughout the day, with food and refreshments available for purchase from Hy Vee. Live entertainment will also be provided.
