Once again, local residents have shown that however unpopular the war in Iraq may be, we will continue to respect and honor our servicemen and women.

There was an informal homecoming ceremony on Saturday in Cedar Rapids for approximately 20 soldiers from Companies A, B and C of the Iowa National Guard’s 234th Signal Battalion, including four local soldiers — Spc. Terry Evers Jr. of Camanche, Spc. Terry Eaker and Spc. Brian Powell of Clinton and Spc. Lucas Gorney of Maquoketa.

The Iowans were deployed in January to Tikrit, Iraq, supporting a Texas Army National Guard unit charged with installing a communications system. The group, made up of many members younger than 21, laid 72 miles of fiber-optic cable and installed and maintained wide-area communications.

It’s good to know we all can respect what these young men and women do for our country. It’s not about politics or policy, it’s all about sacrifice. We respect these people and thank them for their contributions to our country.
