Contributions needed for annual youth event

The Vinson H. Jetter Community Center, d/b/a, Youth For A Safe Non-Violent Community, will host its annul Back to School event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 in Clinton Park, which is located on the corner of South Fourth Street and Third Avenue South, across from Central Fire Station.

This has been a traditional opportunity for local service providers to meet and interact with area families. Everyone is invited to join us in making this a successful event for the kids. The event is free and open to the community.

There will be a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, crafts, face painting and other kid-friendly activities focused on family fun. Clinton native Devan Douglas, who has been drafted to the Globetrotters and was the 2016 NCAA Slam Dunk Champion, will be here this year to help.

He is a graduate of Clinton High School and the University of Mary. He will be giving pointers to improve ball-handling skills, show his favorite slam-dunk techniques and sign autographs. Since the tradition has been to offer this for free, our group is in need of contributions such as food, door prizes and school supplies. Each child receives school supplies while they last.

We also will provide hot dogs, chips, cookies and water for everyone.

If you have any questions or have donations for this event, call (563) 242-3022. Donations may be dropped off at Chiropractic Works, Sherwin Williams, Clinton National Bank on North Second Street, Premier Home Furnishings, Don's Jewelry, the Ericksen Community Center, Clinton Printing, Deanna's Java, Data Dimensions, Victory Center, YWCA, Pizza Ranch, Dudad's Hallmark, Aegis Credit Union, Clinton County Democratic Party on 22nd Place, Corner Deli, HyVee and Ruhl & Ruhl.

The Vinson H. Jetter Community Center is proud to have received the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce Diversity Award for 2015. With the support we receive, we can continue our mission of keeping UNITY in our CommUNITY.
