The “happy happy” stories of foreign exchange students are not the entire story. The Clinton School Board is prudent to look into this issue which has led to the sexual abuse, extortion and neglect of many foreign teenagers.

A clear deadline forces exchange companies to comply with the new U.S. Department of State federal regulations enacted May 4. For too many years, exchange organizations have “dumped” students on school districts leaving staff to deal with a myriad of problems. Any patriotic American would be horrified to learn how many of these innocent foreign children return to their home countries with negative opinions of our beloved USA because of abuse.

Please, let an informed school board enact policies that will help protect these children. Inform yourself as well. The Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students has an informative Web site with tips for prospective host families and students as well as school administrators.
