Reader pins smell on rendering company

Greg Bahr, Clinton
Letter to the Editor

In regards to the editorial “Why Have Odor Complaints Declined?” in the Wednesday edition of the Clinton Herald:

A rendering company stinks; it reeks above and beyond all other Clinton industry combined. It stinks of decaying animals being processed and has done so since my railroad days in the 1970s. The railroad I worked for serviced many Clinton industries, the rendering company smelled bad then, smells bad now and will smell bad in the future. We (railroad crew) used to flip coins to determine which of the crew would enter the facility to switch full tank cars for empty tank cars from the rendering plant. The simple reason for this ritual was the closer you get to the plant the greater the disgusting odor.

If you can’t take my word for it, have a nice lunch some warm summer day, then go for a stroll around the rendering company. Try the same thing for the rest of Clinton's industries then let us know what you think.

Other Clinton industries do emit odors, harmful or not, to this day I can identify all of them and I can honestly say none is near grotesque as the rendering company.

Can the problem be solved? I would say yes. Will it be solved, I would say no. The aroma hasn’t been seriously addressed since the ’70s that I can smell, why now?
