Meet your legislators to gain understanding

Have ever wished you had the chance to talk to your state Representative or Senator? That it would be something more than a telephone call or e-mail or letter? Well, you still have two more chances to do so.

The Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce will host two more legislative coffees, one on March 10 and another on April 14.

The meetings will be at the Chamber office, 721 S. Second St., from 9:30 to 11 a.m. These dates will coincide with the legislative luncheons held in DeWitt on the same dates.

One legislative coffee took place in February and included appearances by five area legislators: Sen. Roger Stewart, D-Preston; Rep. Tom Schueller, D-Maquoketa; Rep. Steve Olson, R-DeWitt; Rep. Polly Bukta, D-Clinton; and Sen. Frank Wood, D-Eldridge.

These five legislators fielded questions and concerns in an unhurried manner, talking about everything from Fair Share legislation to the cigarette tax. They also were able to tell constituents what is known, or unknown, about the bills to be considered and were interested to hear what people had to say.

Our advice is to attend at least one of the two remaining sessions to learn what is going on at your Statehouse.

It truly is our government, and this is one way to better understand it.
