Destination Chicago: Second city’s hot spots profiled

By Elise Loyola
Herald Staff Writer

This past weekend I spent in Chicago visiting my best friend, Brandi. Even after living in the city for the past four years, I still can’t get enough of Chicago’s charisma and air of excitement.

I love that I live close enough to take a weekend getaway or day trip into the city. Although, the best time to go is when it starts getting warm in late April and into the summer months, not when it snows like it did last weekend.

For those who have never been, or who are looking for fun places to visit, I came up with a list of 10 of my favorite Chicago spots, in no particular order.

1. Giordano’s — What better way to experience Chicago than through famous Chicago-style deep-dish pizza? There are plenty of pizzerias to visit, but I recommend Giordano’s. It has a fun dining atmosphere and delicious stuffed pizza. If you’re not a fan of deep dish, other options include thin crust pizza, salads, pastas and sandwiches.

2. John Hancock Tower — I recommend visiting the Signature Lounge on the 96th floor for dessert or drinks in the evening, after sunset. You will get a wonderful view of the city lights through floor-to-ceiling windows. Situated at the base of the Hancock Tower are two other places I love: Jamba Juice and the Cheesecake Factory.

3. Wrigley Field — If you’re a Cubs fan like me, you’ll enjoy visiting Wrigley Field. Full of history, Wrigley captures the true essence of American baseball. Catch a game or visit the surrounding neighborhood and memorabilia shops.

4. Kitsch’n Chicago, River North — Brunch at Kitsch’n is the perfect way to start the day. Enjoy yummy “comfort food” in the groovy retro-style diner. Kitsch’n also has a colorful cocktail lounge, and outdoor beer garden.

5. Navy Pier — There’s lots to see and do on Navy Pier, with its breathtaking views of the city and Lake Michigan. Hop on a boat tour or sample the pier’s entertainment. Enjoy fireworks twice weekly during summer months. Whatever you do, make sure to fit in a ride on the Ferris wheel.

6. Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop — One of my favorite chocolatiers, Ghirardelli, has a shop on Michigan Avenue. Receive a free sample as you walk in the door, and browse gifts, chocolates, and a menu of sweet treats. I recommend ordering some of Ghirardelli’s scrumptious ice cream.

7. Millennium Park — Art, architecture and nature mingle in Millennium Park. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the sights. Don’t forget to get your picture taken with what many call “The Bean,” a large metallic sculpture named Cloud Gate.

8. Sears Tower Skydeck — Ride to the top of the Sears Tower on a clear day and you can see up to 50 miles in every direction. Not only will you see the grandest view of Chicago and beyond, but you will also learn about the city through featured exhibits.

9. Shedd Aquarium — If you like aquatic life, you will enjoy spending a day exploring the beautiful Shedd Aquarium. Watch dolphins put on a show, see penguins play, and watch sharks patrol as you browse the aquarium’s exhibits. The Shedd is situated on Chicago’s Museum Campus which also features the Field Museum and Adler Planetarium.

10. Water Tower Place — No matter the weather, Water Tower Place is the perfect shopping destination. It features over 100 shops including Macy’s, American Girl Place, Adidas, Sephora and Coach. I recommend taking a lunch break at Mity Nice Grill. It offers a killer turkey club sandwich, among a wide variety of options.

Of course much of Chicago’s personality is tucked away on side streets. Sometimes the best way to explore the city is to go on a walking tour. You will undoubtedly discover many of Chicago’s treasures.
