Leadership Institute’s project will have benefits for years

Over the past several years, the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Institute has undertaken a class project to improve the Gateway area.

In the past, the projects have included a media campaign to enlighten people about attractions and businesses here; other projects were showcases, like trade shows, to display what is available.

This year’s project will beautify and safen the area for years to come: the institute is moving forward with plans to place lighting along Clinton’s bike path along the Mississippi riverfront.

The group plans to install the lighting on the entire length of the path, extending from the newly improved Clinton Marina to the North Bridge by this summer. The light poles, which will match those already in place at the refurbished marina, will increase the useful working hours of the bike path.

The group, which is made up of 16 new members each year, takes on a local project with the goal of gaining real world leadership experience and enhancing community value. Although Leadership Institute participants usually “graduate” in May, this year’s volunteers are dedicated to staying on as long as needed to finish their chosen project, which will be entirely financed by private donations and grants.

We want to commend the institute for this great idea and the determination to see it through.
