Grants are welcome news

Monday was another great day for the city of Clinton. On Monday afternoon it was announced by U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley that Clinton is receiving $600,000 in Brownfields grant funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The city received $400,000 in Direct Cleanup grant funding. These funds are used to address sites contaminated by petroleum and hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. The grant award includes $200,000 for the former Benson Oil Company facility and $200,000 for the former Jetter Hauling Service/Hawkeye Disposal properties.

The city also received a Targeted Brownfields Assessment grant in the amount of $200,000 for communitywide hazardous substances. These funds are used to assess the environmental condition of actual or potentially contaminated properties, so that a brownfield site can be cleaned up and reused.

Using money for cleaning up may sound mundane to some, but it is work that needs to be done to push the city’s project list of plans forward.

Money designated by the federal government for that purpose is a chunk of change that the city doesn’t have to pay out of its own pocket as it seeks to take troubled land and turn it into an asset.
