Check your alarms and the batteries inside

Last week and again today, the Clinton Herald published stories about the importance of having working smoke detectors in area homes.

The first story detailed Allyson Roberts of Fulton, Ill., and how she heard a smoke alarm going off in her home shortly after 4 a.m. recently. The child was the only one to wake up in her home, and had the presence of mind to find her mother. The two discovered a charred area and escaped the home with all family members and pets making it out safely. Our story today, however, does not have the same happy ending. The body of Susan Lee Hill, 38, 521 Fourth Ave. South, was discovered inside her residence on March 23, after firefighters responded to a structure fire in a three-unit home. Officials reported that smoke detectors were located in each of the three apartments, but the smoke detector in the apartment where Hill was discovered was not operating.

The moral of these two stories?

It is important to have working smoke detectors. Check the batteries to ensure they work or that they haven’t been disconnected for any reason.

We know the smoke alarm made a difference in the Fulton fire. We may never know for sure about the fatal fire in Clinton. But one thing is for sure, taking the time to make sure you have working alarms gives you a better chance for survival in the long run.
