Come on out to the Juneteenth celebration

A very special event is taking place Tuesday along Clinton’s riverfront. On that day from noon to 8 p.m., residents will be able to take part in the city’s first Juneteenth celebration.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, nearly three years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

Five years ago, former Gov. Tom Vilsack signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a state holiday known as Juneteenth National Freedom Day.

Today, Juneteenth celebrations highlight, promote and encourage cooperative relations among all cultural communities. The day is celebrated across the nation through a range of activities including barbecuing, fishing and community gatherings.

There will be something for everyone and we’re very excited to have another celebration added to the list of events for residents to come out and see — especially one that has such a rich historical meaning.

If you have a chance to see this event, we’re hoping you’ll come on out and show support for the newest addition to Clinton’s list of things to do.
