The mercury spill at ADM seems like a major environmental and health issue. Seems as though very little has been done since the spill on Nov 8. This is shameful. Surprising to me that Clinton and the state of Iowa seem to be reacting to this rather nonchalantly. What is the clean-up plan? When will it be placed into action? How are citizens of Clinton and surrrounding area assured that the drinking water isn’t contaminated with mercury? Why does the state of Iowa allow mercury pump seals to be used in service where the water supply could potentially be contaminated with mercury?
I suppose mechanical seals might be slightly more expensive or slightly more expensive to maintain? But we are talking about “the water supply system” It’s surprising that a “supposedly forward-thinking state” would allow so much time to pass without some remediation plan being undertaken. Seems as though ADM is hoping that, as time passes, the Clinton public and government officials will forget about this “lost poisonous mercury.”
