Preserve the library's Lyons branch

The Clinton Herald

---- — It is really bad news that the Lyons Public Library is supposed to close. I see more people using the library and its facilities than ever before. I don’t think people realize how lucky we are to have a branch library.

You can drive all over the Midwest and will be lucky to find more than one library in a town the size of Clinton. Iowa City, our college town west of here, has only one library.

The Lyons branch library is where I got my first library card as a 4- or 5-year-old. It is where I enrolled in the summer reading program in 1961 to 1962 (I still have the reading program stickers). In the spring, summer and autumn vendors and patrons of the Farmers’ Market like to use its bathroom. On these bitterly cold days it has been a good place to go to read newspapers and pass time until it warms up, especially on Saturdays.

The Lyons library has been around longer than I have lived, so please don’t close it. The library sponsored a great rock concert twice in the park last summer. It was a lot of fun.
