River Bend parent: Teachers, coaches need our support

I am the mother of three children in the River Bend school system, one in each of the three schools, elementary, middle and high school.

The past few months have been a challenging time for our schools with our school board having to make difficult budget decisions. The results in these cuts have been the loss of some valuable teachers to our students, faculty and staff.

The projected classroom sizes for the upcoming school year are alarming and I as a parent question the level of education my children will receive. I also have to question how the board expects the remaining teachers to fulfill their already full schedules and cover the recently vacated teacher slots.

The school board has also decided not to rehire any of our high school boy’s basketball coaches for the upcoming school year, thus leaving our kids with no idea where the program is headed.

With the loss of brilliant teachers and coaches, who our students have tremendous respect for and the basketball program up in the air we all are very worried what the future holds and we question what is driving our school board’s decisions. I would like to appeal to the community for support of our students and teachers.

This is a very difficult time for all of them and they need to know they have our support. If you are a parent, grandparent, friend or neighbor to any student or teacher of the River Bend school system please ask questions and get involved.

Renee Mason,

Fulton, Ill.

  • Letter to the Editor: Local firefighters' union speaks out on proposed contract

    Dear citizens/taxpayers of Clinton:
The members of Local 609 feel that it is our duty to inform the citizens of Clinton that the article titled “‘Fair offer’ differences” in the April 9, 2014 edition of the Clinton Herald was full of inaccurate statements regarding our negotiated contract proposal with the city. These incorrect statements could impact the use of your city funds negatively and unduly influence our elected representatives. So, we would like to address these points, as follows:
