Herald Editor Duane Nollen

Published May 07, 2007 10:29 am - We just completed the 2007 session of the Iowa Legislature in which the new Democratic governor and Democratic majority in both houses passed most of their agenda items.

COLUMN: Question of the Week: Are you tired of politics?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

By an almost 2-1 margin, the 87 Herald readers who answered last week’s Question of the Week: Are you satisfied with your state lawmakers? said “Yes.”

Fifty-seven — 65.52 percent — answered “Yes” while 30 — 34.48 percent — said “No.”

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s question deals with politics and the public’s endurance of non-stop political campaigning.

We just completed the 2007 session of the Iowa Legislature in which the new Democratic governor and Democratic majority in both houses passed most of their agenda items. Both at the local and state level, debate was extensive on hot button issues such as the minimum wage, Right to Work, civil liberties for gays, the Iowa Power Fund and the cigarette tax.

Before anyone can catch their breath, the presidential candidates of both parties have just had their first debates. As of Friday, the Democrats had one last week and the Republicans just a couple days ago.

Not only that, but the parties are battling over the vetoed Iraq war funding resolution that would have set a timetable for withdrawal. On top of that, ABC News released some high-profile names of a Washington, D.C., madam who ran an escort-service for the rich and politically powerful.

Can we have a break?

Are the American people getting tired of politics? Remember, the Iowa Caucuses are less than a year away and the presidential primaries are getting front-loaded so that the parties’ nominees will be decided early for an even longer general election campaign.

This week’s Question of the Week: Are you tired of politics? Yes or No.

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
