Library encourages locals to write

OSKALOOSA

No need to fear, “Let’s Write” is here.

The Oskaloosa Public Library is inviting Mahaska County residents to explore their creative writing potential through a four-month long excursion into the written word simply called, Let’s Write.

The Let’s Write program includes a Tuesday night writers’ group, as well as a writhing contest.

“I think it’s a great match for the library’s mission,” explained Oskaloosa Public Library Director Suzann Holland. “Many of us are closet writers and maybe just need a little support to turn that dream into a reality and the development of a community writers group introduces that support.”

Holland said those without formal writing experience need not shy away from participating in the writers’ group. She said people can expect an informal and relaxed environment from the group.

“Weather you’re published or unpublished, everybody is welcome,” said Holland. “The goal is to get feedback and kind of share your writer’s war stories and have an opportunity to read people’s work and just find a supportive environment to see if you really have a writer’s soul in you. We’re trying to put all the tools in the public’s hands to finally, this fall and winter, to make that happen.”

Let’s Write will devote each month’s Tuesday night meetings to a creative writing genre including poetry, fan fiction, short stories and creative nonfiction. Participants will be able to enter their works in a contest with prizes given for the best in each genre, as well as an overall winner’s prize.

“My personal favorite is creative nonfiction,” said Holland. “Writing nonfiction involves more creativity than people realize because you’re still telling a story.”

Let’s Write will meet 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library with City Councilwoman Pam Blomgren facilitating. Blomgren will lead the group each Tuesday in November with a focus on poetry.
