Question of the Week: Do you feel more confident about the economy?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

By an almost 4-1 margin, those people who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Did Donald Trump do the right thing to let Prejean keep her crown? answered YES.

Sixty-two — 79.49 percent — answered YES while 16 — 20.51 percent — said NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with your outlook on the economy.

The Conference Board released its Consumer Confidence Index recently, and it has dramatically rebounded in May. The Index was at 40.8 in April and zoomed to 54.9 in May. The index had hit a historic low of 25.3 in February.

This numbers are encouraging, but the numbers are way below 100, which indicates a healthy economy, the Associated Press reported.

Investors also feel more confident in that the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 203.42 — 2.5 percent — to 8,480.74, the AP reported.

While people do feel more confident, not all the news was good.

The latest report on home prices — released Tuesday — showed that prices fell at the fastest annual rate on record in the first quarter, but the pace of month-to-month declines slowed. The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller National Home Price Index fell by 19.1 percent in the first quarter. In all, home prices have fallen 32.2 percent since peaking in the second quarter of 2006, the AP reported.

Also, the unemployment rate is expected to rise to 9.2 percent in May from 8.9 percent in April, the AP reported.

Is the economy improving? Is there hope for the future?

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Do you feel more confident about the economy?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
