Question of the Week: Did Obama make a good choice with Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

A majority of those who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Do you feel more confident about the economy? said NO.

Twenty — 38.46 percent — said YES while 32 — 61.54 percent — said NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

President Obama recently named Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to the Supreme Court. Sotomayor has Puerto Rican roots and grew up in a blue-collar household in the Bronx in New York City. She won scholarships to Princeton and then Yale. She worked her way up through New York’s Democratic power structure and landed in a corporate law firm. She then was appointed to the appellate court.

If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court member.

Republicans are divided over how aggressively they should scrutinize Sotomayor in her Senate confirmation process.

Some conservatives want to go after her. Other Republicans do not want to act too aggressively and potentially alienate the fastest growing minority group in the country.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in regards to Sotomayor’s comments that a Latina woman would rule more wisely than a white man: “New racism is no better than old racism,” The Associated Press reported.

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Did Obama make a good choice with Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
