Published October 27, 2009 04:19 pm - Oskaloosa's Sara Dickinson qualifies for second straight state cross country meet.

Dickinson advances to state cross country meet

KNOXVILLE

Oskaloosa senior Sara Dickinson has not had as dominating season this year as she had in 2008.

She went undefeated in claiming the Class 3A individual title in Fort Dodge last season.

Dickinson has been bothered with an injury for most of the year, but was able to put that behind her as she finished runner-up to Grinnell’s Sarah Burnell at Monday’s regional meet in Knoxville.

Dickinson ran a time of 16:39.3 while Burnell had a time of 16:16 for the individual title.

“Sara ran a good race for missing much of the year, and she was a little tired in the last mile,” Oskaloosa coach Keith Comfort said. “It was just good to see her back running again. She is such a competitor and now she can get ready for Saturday.”

The state meet is Saturday at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

The Indians came in 10th as a team with 241 points while the team champion was Pella with 63 points.

Meghan Toubekis ran 18:32.5 to come in 35th overall for Oskaloosa and Paige Walter was 65th in the time of 20:15.8 and Angela Hyland was close behind in 67th in 20:23.3.

“Meghan Toubekis continued her strong second half of the season for the girls,” Comfort said. “She has run really well the last few meets and had a good finish again today. She will be a key to the success of the team in the coming years.

“Paige Walter, Angela Hyland and Kayley Keller rounded out the scorers for the team. with Natalie Whitis and Courtney Converse also running. The girls ran tough today, but we have been hampered by illness the last week or two and that affected our team performance today.

“The girls have run well for us all year and gained some valuable experience this year. That will be a building block for next year. I am proud of all our girls and the effort they have given to us. We have a talented group of girls coming back next year with the ability to be a rally strong team.”

For the boys, the team also placed 10th with 264 points while the Little Dutch completed a sweep of the team titles with 27 points.

Ryan McPherren concluded a strong season with a 23rd-place finish in 18:28 for the Indians as five other runners finished from 54th to 71st place.

“Ryan McPherren was the top runner for the Indians running a strong race to finish in 23rd,” Comfort said. “Ryan has done a great job leading the team this year, and I am very proud of his effort all year long  He has been a key contributor for the team throughout his high school career and we will miss him.”

Lincoln Morris was 54th while Isaiah Thompson, Max Holle, Nicholas Lobberecht and Alex Hyland were 60th, 62nd, 65th and 72st respectively.
