Published October 28, 2009 04:47 pm - Now, a new Web site will publish results of youth and adult sports leagues across Mahaska County.

Herald kicks off new community sports Web site
Community youth and adult sports leagues invited to publish results, articles on new Web site, sponsored by The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

Since the beginning of the newspaper age, sports teams and players have pasted newspaper accounts of their games and victories into scrapbooks that eventually age and get dusty.

But many athletes who compete in community leagues and in less well-known sports have not received the attention that pro and high school athletes do.

That is about to change.

A new Web site, Herald Sports Center, will publish the results of youth and adult sports leagues from around Mahaska County and surrounding areas.

These teams now can go online to chronicle their achievements at http://hsc.ia.oursportscommunity.com.

The site is sponsored by The Oskaloosa Herald, and operated by Community Sports Desk, a national sports software and service company headquartered in Kenosha, Wis.

Its goal is to shine a spotlight on sports at the local level.

“The Community Sports Desk will enable the local sports community to share their stories and photos and highlights with the rest of the community through the newspaper,” said Marco Santi, business manager for Community Sports Desk.

“There are so many leagues and teams and sports out of the community that go unnoticed because of staff constraints at the newspaper. This will allow for folks to bring their stories to the newspaper through this community sports desk platform.”

The site is designed to be friendly to every level of participation from Pee-Wee to Adult sports and recreation.

Team representatives can post their schedules, game stories, statistics, standings and photos on the site.

The software assists in writing news stories. It will prepare a headline and game summary based on statistics provided to it. Coaches or other team representatives can expand stories with as much detail as they wish.

The first stories and teams began to appear on the site last week. Many more are expected as winter sports get under way.

The Herald is one of more than 50 newspapers from around the country using the Community Sports Desk software.

League officials who want to participate in Herald Sports Center may call (888) 672-2581 toll free or email support@communitysportsdesk.com.
