Pella Christian volleyball players Bekah Posthuma (left), Meredith Fopma (center) and Jasmin Schelaas (3) celebrate their team’s Class 2A regional final victory over No. 8 Mediapolis Tuesday night in Washington. The Eagles stunned the Bullettes 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 to advance to their ninth state tournament in school history and fourth in a row.

Pella Christian had a tall task on its hands as it faced No. 8 Mediapolis in a Class 2A regional final Tuesday night.

After all, the Bullettes had a 43-3 record, winning their last 15 matches coming in while the Eagles had a 22-14 mark.

But looks can be very deceiving.

With a state tournament berth at stake for the winner, it was Pella Christian that played like the ranked team as it surprised Mediapolis 25-16, 25-12, 25-16. It will be the Eagles’ fourth straight appearance — and ninth overall — at the state tournament, where they will face Mount Vernon at 7:15 p.m. next Thursday.

The Eagles never alowed the Bulldogs to get in the match, seemingly blocking every kill attempt and passing very effectively.

Pella Christian coach John Evenhouse didn’t think his squad would dominate Mediapolis like it did.

“I thought our chances were 40-60. We’ve seen them play and they’re a fine ball club,” he said. “We have played all this year really struggling with making mistakes. The first game we served the ball out of bounds eight times. We almost did nothing else wrong. This is, by far, the best we have played all year.

“I think when we started blocking them, I’m not sure they knew what to do. We had them very frustrated. They’re a great ball club and we had to play very well to do what we did to them.”

Pella Christian scored the first four points of the match as Bekah Posthuma served an ace and Paige Zylstra knocked down an ace.

That start had Mediapolis on its heels and it never recovered as the Eagles maintained that lead on their way to a 25-16 win.

The Bullettes actually tied the second set twice early, but Pella Christian scored five straight points with Meredith Fopma doing the honors with a pair of aces.

Mediapolis coach Dennis Jandrey called a time out and while Kelsi Rowe’s kill got the serve back to the Bullettes, the Eagles had two aces by Courtney Kroeze on a 5-2 run, forcing Jandrey to call his second and final time out ofthe set.

It didn’t help much as the Eagles extended the lead to 20-10 and never looked back, winning 25-12.
