  • What a disaster
It has been awhile since I enjoyed a good end of the world disaster movie, but thanks to new movie, “2012,” I have my death and mayhem fill for a few years.

  • First Baptist is second featured home for Christmas Pilgrimage
The second place featured for the Civic Woman’s Club annual Christmas Pilgrimage is the First Baptist Church of Picayune.

  • Parade of homes for Christmas Pilgrimage
Have you ever seen a house and wished you could go inside and see what it looks like — to stroll through the living room and see how it is decorated, stop in the kitchen and study the color scheme and layout, poke your head in the bedroom and wonder what it would be like to sleep there?

  • Book review reveals Mississippi during the Civil War
Beverly Creel will be reviewing “The State of Jones,” by Washington Post reporter Sally Jenkins and Harvard historian John Stauffer.

  • Sweet potato makes stunning landscapes
Ornamental sweet potatoes rule! I just returned from speaking to a group, called Pascagoula Pride, that takes city beautification seriously. As I drove through town, I could not help but admire their effective use of the lime green ornamental sweet potatoes.

  • Homegrown heroes — honor Veterans everyday
It is another 11th month, another 11th day, another 11th hour and another special day to honor our Veterans, the brave heroes who serve in our military forces. If a day had a color, this would be the red, white and blue day. Our patriotism should be evident. Fly a flag!

  • The history behind the Purple Heart
It is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces. Introduced as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is also the nation’s oldest military award. In military terms, the award had “broken service,” as it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was re-introduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The medal’s plain inscription “FOR MILITARY MERIT” barely expresses its significance.

  • A fabulous night of one-acts
Get ready for a night of sheer entertainment with the production of “A Fabulous Festival Night of One-Acts,” a collaborative effort between Picayune Memorial High School’s High Tide Productions drama troupe and Pearl River Central High School’s Blue Maskers drama troupe.
