Ornamental sweet potatoes rule! I just returned from speaking to a group, called Pascagoula Pride, that takes city beautification seriously. As I drove through town, I could not help but admire their effective use of the lime green ornamental sweet potatoes.

It is another 11th month, another 11th day, another 11th hour and another special day to honor our Veterans, the brave heroes who serve in our military forces. If a day had a color, this would be the red, white and blue day. Our patriotism should be evident. Fly a flag!

The history behind the Purple Heart

It is one of the most recognized and respected medals awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces. Introduced as the “Badge of Military Merit” by General George Washington in 1782, the Purple Heart is also the nation’s oldest military award. In military terms, the award had “broken service,” as it was ignored for nearly 150 years until it was re-introduced on February 22, 1932, on the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. The medal’s plain inscription “FOR MILITARY MERIT” barely expresses its significance.

Picayune Memorial High School Band continues to grow

When Tim Garrett arrived a little over a year ago to be the band director for Picayune Memorial High School, he didn’t fully realize the obstacles he was facing. Discovering only a handful of students still trying to hang on after several years of unstability in the program, he knew he’d have to dig his heels to make the band work. Students, frustrated with an ever-changing series of band directors — seven within the last four years — had dropped out of the band in droves.
