Street Fair to offer more vendors

JEREMY PITTARI
Item Staff Writer

PICAYUNE This season’s Street Fair will host more vendors while continuing to offer a number of the old favorites.

Picayune Main Street Manager Reba Beebe said the event, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will have two musical acts on Saturday, exhibition shows on Sunday, along with cars and motorcycles on display between the two days.

The classic cars will be on display on Saturday, while the motorcycle show will be held on Sunday. Vehicle shows take place next to the train tracks between U.S. Highway 11 and Main Street.

To accommodate more vendors during this iteration of the twice yearly event, some booth sizes have been reduced. Beebe said most cities and towns that hold events similar to Picayune’s Street Fair offer vendors booth sizes of 10 feet by 10 feet. Most booth sizes for previous Picayune Street Fairs were 10 feet by 20 feet. This year some of the booth sizes have been cut to the 10-foot-by-10-foot size, allowing more vendors to attend. Beebe said there are still about 40 vendors on the event’s waiting list even with the additional vendor space. Beebe said she expects a few less than 300 vendors to be at this event.

Vendors from as far away as Missouri and Texas are expected.

Musical acts for Saturday include Melanie Wilkinson, who will perform Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and the Wardell Williams Band, which will perform that same day at 1 p.m. Those performances will be held at a stage that will be set up on Haugh Avenue.

Demonstrations and dance numbers will be featured on Sunday, such as performances by local dance schools, the Piney Woods Cloggers and local martial arts schools. Those performances also will be held at the stage on Haugh Avenue, Beebe said.

Food will be available for purchase at the event, including all the old favorites, said Main Street Assistant Eileen Baker. She said some new food items also will be offered, such as fried Snickers bars, fried moon pies and fried Oreos. There is a vendor scheduled who will be selling homemade ice cream as well as another vendor who will offer smoked oysters.

Children can expect to see their favorite attractions at this season’s Street Fair, such as the rock wall, train rides, pony rides, Euro Bungie and all the usual inflatable rides.
