Seven candidates vie for two nominations

CLINTON — Seven candidates are competing in Tuesday’s primary for their party’s nomination for U.S. Representative in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

The seat is being vacated by eight-term Rep. Jim Nussle, who is the lone Republican candidate for Iowa gubernatorial nomination.

The district includes Butler, Blackhawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Clinton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Jackson, Jones and Scott counties.

Seeking the Democratic nomination are Bruce Braley, Rick Dickinson, Bill Gluba and Denny Heath.

Bruce Braley

Braley, of Waterloo, has served on the platform committees of Black Hawk County, the 1st Congressional District and the 2nd Congressional District. He is the past president of the Iowa Trial Lawyers Association and has served as president of Waterloo Dollars for Scholars, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa and Black Hawk Swimming Association Inc. He has been an elder in his church and on the boards of the Visiting Nurse Association, the Waterloo Historic Preservation Commission and the Waterloo Swimming Association.

Rick Dickinson

Dickinson, of Sabula, is an eastern Iowa native. He grew up on a rural Jackson County farm and graduated from William Penn College in 1975. Dickinson spent four years as a state corrections officer in Jackson County and is a former mayor of Sabula. He also has served as a Jackson County Supervisor and was elected twice to represent Jackson and southern Dubuque counties in the Iowa Legislature.

Bill Gluba

Gluba, of Davenport, worked as a union construction laborer to pay tuition at St. Ambrose College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He also received his master’s from the University of Iowa. Gluba served in the Iowa Legislature, one term as a Representative and two terms as a Senator, and has served as chairman of the Scott County Board of Supervisors.

Gluba has been a Democratic activist for more than 30 years and is a licensed real estate agent with RE/MAX River Cities Inc. in Bettendorf. Nussle defeated Gluba in 2004.

Denny Heath, of Clinton, is a former teacher, former owner of several small businesses and recently retired from working as a railroad conductor for Chicago and Northwestern Railroad and Amtrak. He received an Associate of Arts from Clinton Community College in 1967, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa in 1970 and a Master of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1974. Heath worked as a Medical Technician at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton in 1970 and was a teacher at Bryon Community Schools from 1970 to 1971. Heath served as president of the “S” Corporation from 1983 to 1990. He failed to capture the party’s nomination in 2004 and ran in the general election as an independent.

Three candidates are seeking the Republican nomination,State Rep. Bill Dix, Brian Kennedy and Mike Whalen.

Bill Dix, of Shell Rock, is currently a State Representative. He is vice chairman of the Administration and Rules Committee and is on the Appropriations, Commerce and Regulation and Local Government committees. He was first elected to the Statehouse in 1996 and has served five two-year terms in the Iowa House of Representatives. He is a member of the Lions Club, Shell Rock Music Association, Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association,and Rotary Club. Dix is a farmer.

Brian Kennedy, of Bettendorf, is the former chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa. He was raised in eastern Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University and Drake University Law School. Kennedy has been a member of the Republican National Committee and has served as co-chairman of the Republican National Convention Platform Committee. He is a past executive director of the Republican Governors Association and has served as a political adviser or campaign manager to former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, as well as for U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander and Elizabeth Dole. Kennedy is a founder of Progress for America and Campaign of One. He is a member of the Iowa Bar Association, the Bettendorf Rotary Club and the Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce. Kennedy lives in Bettendorf and practices law in Davenport.

Mike Whalen, of Davenport, received a Bachelor of Arts from University of Illinois in 1975 and graduated with honors from Harvard Law School in 1978. He has developed several hotels and restaurants in Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois. Whalen was co-founder of KZZQ-FM, a contemporary Christian radio station in Des Moines. He was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. Magazine in 1991 and received an Entrepreneurial Success Award from the U.S. Small Business Association in 1993. He served as a board member for the National Center for Policy Analysis for four years and was policy chairman for one year. He was the Iowa state chairman for the For Our Grandchildren organization, as well as the National Town Hall Chairman, from 2003 to 2004.
