Clinton’s RAGBRAI route announced

Clinton will host 15,000 riders on July 28

CLINTON — The Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committees of Clinton have released the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) route into Clinton for July 28, the last day of the 471-mile journey.

“It is not often River Bend Bicycle Club members ride into their hometown on the final day of RAGBRAI,” said Mike Clemence, RBBC member.

Riders will enter Clinton County near Lost Nation and travel on Iowa 136 through Delmar, Charlotte, Goose Lake and into Clinton.

Clinton’s 9/11 Freedom Tree Park will signal the right turn off Main Avenue onto Mill Creek Parkway.  Mill Creek Parkway will be the last incline of RAGBRAI XL before riders turn left onto the 19th Avenue North extension and travel to Springdale Drive.

Spring-dale Drive residents will greet the 15,000 riders and cheer them down Springdale Drive to Ashford University.

At Ashford University, riders will turn left onto Bluff Boulevard and Seventh Avenue North.

With just a few blocks to go, riders will travel on Seventh Avenue North to North Third Street for two blocks until the final right hand turn of RAGBRAI onto Ninth Avenue North and east to the Dip Site at the Ninth Avenue North boat ramp.

The area around the Ninth Avenue North boat ramp, the boat trailer parking area and a portion of the Clinton RV Park  will be closed to the public. Riders will form up in the boat storage parking lot north of Ninth Avenue North preparing to dip their tires.  After dipping, riders are encouraged to visit the vendors, RAGBRAI merchandise tents, bike packaging and luggage trucks that will be south of Ninth Avenue North in the boat trailer parking and RV Park.

Charter buses, team buses and support vehicles will enter Clinton on U.S. 30 traveling down Liberty Avenue and use the parking lots in the downtown area to wait for their riders.

A great amount of work went into these decisions by the Law Enforcement, Public Safety and Ride Right Committees to pick the best route.

“Consideration was given to what would be appealing to first-time riders to Clinton, rider safety, logistics and the community and traffic impacted by the event,” said Joe Raaymakers, co-chairman of Clinton’s RAGBRAI XL committee.
