Clinton lands RAGBRAI stop

Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa to follow route that will end here

CLINTON — Thousands of bicyclists will pedal into Clinton on July 28 as the community has been selected one of eight host cities for the 40th Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

The announcement was made Saturday night by RAGBRAI Director T.J. Juskiewicz, who declared Clinton as the final stop on a route that also includes Sioux Center, Cherokee, Lake View, Webster City, Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids and Anamosa.

It is the fifth time the city has served as the endpoint of the six-day ride. RAGBRAI riders also came to Clinton in 1978, 1985, 1994 and 2004.

In making the announcement, Juskiewicz stated  riders will see significant changes in Clinton's riverfront as they enter Riverview Park and that the community was one of the inaugural Iowa Great Places locations.

RAGBRAI is a seven-day bicycle ride across the state and is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world. RAGBRAI started in 1973 as a six-day ride across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register columnists who invited a few friends along.

It is held the last full week in July.  RAGBRAI is planned and coordinated by The Des Moines Register.

The RAGBRAI route averages 468 miles.  It begins somewhere along Iowa’s western border on the Missouri River and ends along the eastern border on the Mississippi River.  Organizers change the route each year and announce the overnight towns in late January at the RAGBRAI Route Announcement Party, in The Des Moines Register and on the RAGBRAI Web site.

This year's route will be 471.1 miles long, is the 18th shortest in the ride’s history and is the 11th flattest route ridden. Organizers also say it is the ninth easiest route in the history of the ride.
