The Northeast Rebels boys basketball team — losers of just one other game the entire season — fell short Thursday afternoon in a Class 2A semifinal contest against the Gaels of Fort Dodge St. Edmond. They also lost their consolation game Friday.

Though disappointment likely reigned supreme as the Rebels players, coaches and fans watched another school crowned state champion Friday, we hope to remind them how special a season like this truly is. Current Rebels coach Kevin Enwright has taken five teams to the state tournament, and only the current squad advanced this far.

Every year, only one team wins its final game and stands as state champ. This year that team wasn’t Northeast, but the boys played better basketball than almost every other school their size in Iowa, and that’s something to be proud of for years to come.

Any time a team can finish a season with just three losses, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Congratulations, Rebels.

You’ve done the area proud. Not just on the floor, but also in the crowd and the community at large.

This fine showing will be long remembered.
