MUSCATINE — The Clinton River Kings dropped both ends of a Mississippi Athletic Conference with the Muscatine Muskies Thursday, falling by scores of 9-3 and 6-4.

In the opener Clinton (3-5, 2-4 MAC) scored first with a run in the first inning. Muscatine took control with a seven-run second inning. The Kings cut into the margin with two runs in the fifth, making it 7-3. But, the Muskies answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Ryan Clausen had two doubles and drove in a run for Clinton. David Lakin also had two hits, while Chris Perrin had an RBI.

In Game 2 Muscatine went up 5-0 with two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. The Kings cut the gap to 5-3 with a three-run third inning.

The Muskies scored once more in the fourth. Clinton pushed one run across in the seventh before falling short.

Dustin Carpenter had a pair of hits for the Kings in the second game. Teammate Tanner Skiff drove in two runs, while Perrin drove in another.

“Muscatine just outplayed us in Game 1,” Clinton coach Trent Snowden said. “They really hit the ball hard and made the big defensive plays when they had to. In Game 2 we played better baseball.

“We pitched, fielded and hit better, but it just wasn’t enough to win. Our team will regroup. We just need to play more consistently for longer periods of time.”

The Kings host their own four-team tournament at Alliant Energy Field Saturday. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. with Clinton taking on Camanche. In the second semifinal, at approximately noon, Northeast meets Calamus-Wheatland. The consolation game is set for approximately 2 p.m., with the championship game scheduled for approximately 4 p.m.
