Board to prioritize PPEL

By Sonja Young
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — The Clinton School Board on Monday will be asked to accept the priority list for athletic facility needs and improvements — one of the items on the “to do” list if the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy is passed.

In January the board voted unanimously to hold a special school election on March 7, the second time in less than a year PPEL will be put before the voters.

If renewed, the levy will generate approximately $433,000 per year for building repair and maintenance. That list includes $2 million to be set aside for athletic facilities development.

A task force was established to make recommendations regarding the order in which athletic facility needs should be addressed. That list includes four baseball fields, four softball fields and two soccer fields. Proposed improvements to the Clinton High School football and track facilities would include switching the home and away bleachers at Coan Field; widening the football field, which would allow it to be used as another competitive soccer field; and widening the track from six to eight lanes.

Other facility improvements would be building new gym facilities in front of the existing Yourd Gym including a fieldhouse with an indoor track and three multipurpose gymnasiums with drop curtains for basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and track.

The board also will be asked to approve the academic calendar for the 2006-07 school year and act on a request from the Northeast Community School District to share a cooperative athletic agreement for girls soccer.

The board will be asked to ratify tentative contract agreements with the Service Employees International Union Local 199 — bus drivers and custodians — and act on one retirement.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
