Northeast puts dollars to work

GOOSE LAKE — With the final school bell of the term just a memory, the Northeast School District will be putting local option sales tax income to work improving facilities this summer.
School board members at their Wednesday meeting approved $106,200 worth of work, including:
• Locker replacements, $26,500;
• Painting, $22,000;
• Running water to the new bus garage, $10,000;
• Water tank replacement, $8,000;
• Roof repairs, $1,000;
• Fitness center fans, $1,200;
• Routers and switches for technology system, $7,500;
• Concrete work, $5,000; and
• Payment on bus purchase contract, $25,000.
In addition to local option sales tax income, money from the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy approved by voters will be used.
Staff changes
The board also approved the following staff changes for the next school year:
Resignations: Peggy Sellnau, after-prom party adviser; Troy Meyermann, assistant varsity football coach; Gwenn Costello, contest speech director; Troy Hansen, assistant varsity softball coach; Kellen Schneeberger, assistant varsity wrestling coach; and Wanika Perrow, classroom associate.
New teachers: Jennifer House, high school English; Steve Farrell, high school physical education, health and social studies; Amanda Eberhart, business education; and Janeen Varner, district technology (part time).
New assignments: Jennifer House, contest speech director and yearbook adviser; and Amanda Eberhart, Future Business Leaders of America adviser.
Coaches: Stephanie Howe, assistant varsity softball; Teri Howe, middle school softball; Troy Hansen, girls varsity basketball; Megan Van Hyfte, assistant varsity girls basketball and varsity volleyball; Danny Vogel, boys varsity basketball; Steve Farrell, assistant varsity football and assistant varsity wrestling; and Eric Lueders, varsity wrestling.
Other business
The board approved a list of 33 community and staff members who have agreed to serve on a school improvement advisory committee.
Two bids were received on the school property and casualty insurance: Employers Mutual, $71,444, and Hawkeye Insurance Group, $66,265.
The board was told the district received a dividend of $4,655 from Employers Mutual this year.
“In consideration of the dividend and coverages, it is my recommendation we accept the bid from EMC,” Superintendent Jim Cox said. The board so voted.
Open enrollment applications for five students from East Central, Delwood and Clinton were accepted.
Instructional agreements with Preston and East Central were approved, with the fee for each student increased from $300 to $330 per course. The two districts send students to Northeast for courses they cannot receive at home, such as Spanish and technology.
The board approved an articulation agreement with Indian Hills.
Earlier meeting
At an earlier meeting, the board approved the following fees for next year:
Book rental (all grades), $35; Student activity card, $30; family activity card, $60; fitness center (faculty and staff), $30; and fitness center (community), $50.
Locker fees were discontinued.
The following meal charges are adopted: student lunch, $1.50/1.60; student breakfast, $0.95; adult lunch, $2.75; adult breakfast, $1.25; and individual milk, $0.30.
