‘Into the Woods’ opens Friday at CHS

CLINTON — Toss together the familiar stories of “Cinderella,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and Rapunzel into a big pot of laughter and confusion and you’ve got something called “Into the Woods,” a magical and engaging musical to be presented at the Vernon Cook Little Theatre Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Into the Woods” debuted on Broadway on Nov. 5, 1987, winning three Tony Awards in its first year. It was performed 764 times on Broadway, and now can be witnessed on the Clinton High stage.

“Into the Woods” features the music and lyrics of Stephen Sondheim. The tale follows the story of numerous famous fairy tales, with the addition of a few new lovable characters, as they all search for their own “Happily Ever After.”

The well-known fantasy characters are pushed into one another’s stories during their journeys. They find that they must depend on each other more than ever if they wish to achieve their dreams. By the end of act one, everyone gets what they deserve and happiness is found by those who have earned it.

As the lights for act two come up, however, it quickly becomes clear that what the characters really wished for always seems to be just out of their reach. The characters are now forced to face the consequences for their earlier actions. Is “Happily Ever After” really worth it?

Wayne Hess and his assistant, Lisa Weber, are directing Clinton’s production of “Into the Woods.” Musical direction is by Karl Wolf, accompanied by Maureen Pollpeter. The musical features numerous captivating songs including “I Know Things Now,” “Giants in the Sky,” and “Agony.” This colorful and thought-provoking story boasts a dazzling array of acting and vocal talents from Clinton’s group of thespians.

The performances are general seating only. Tickets are $7 each for all ages and may be purchased at the door or pre-ordered through a drama member or by phone. Pre-ordered tickets can be picked up before the performance at a special table. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to show time.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Call CHS at 243-7540, ext.1520, to pre-order tickets.
