Washington unveils new marquee

By Sonja Young
Herald Staff Writer

CLINTON — Washington Middle School has a new addition to its campus that staff, students and neighbors alike can be proud of.

Thanks to the efforts of the WMS Parent Teacher Student Association and the athletic boosters, a new marquee stands in front of the school.

When Brian Kenney took over last year as WMS principal he said he and the PTSA were looking for different ways to communicate with the public.

At that time Kenney suggested the idea of a lighted marquee or sign that announced upcoming events.

From there the project took off and the “PTSA raised money to help make it happen,” Kenney said.

“We were going to apply for a gaming grant and Gregg Obren, a PTSA dad, applied for the grant but unfortunately we were turned down,” he explained.

But Kenney said there were quite a few businesses who donated labor and materials. The athletic boosters donated $4,000 to the project and the PTSA picked up the remaining amount.

“If we would have had to pay for everything the cost of the marquee would have been about $7,000,” Kenney said. “It lights up at night and the brickwork looks really cool.”
