Dinner showcases academic excellence

---- — FULTON, Ill. — The River Bend Education Foundation will host its annual Academic Excellence Dinner this weekend.

Fulton High School graduate Michael Woods will be the keynote speaker for the dinner Saturday at the Fulton High School cafeteria. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to hear Woods speak and attend the awards ceremony at 7:15 p.m.

The dinner honors high school students who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.75. Each year, a graduate of Fulton High School, is invited to be the speaker and share their life experiences since graduation.

Woods, a 1958 graduate, was best known as a basketball player during his high school years and is currently researching a book on sports dynasties in small communities. The title of his speech is “You may leave Fulton, but Fulton will never leave you.”

Woods earned his Master of Education and Doctorate of Education Degrees from the University of Illinois. His teaching experiences spanned from 1963 to 2012. He has taught in the junior and high schools in Champaign, Ill., and served on the faculty in the College of Education at the University of Illinois; retiring in 2012.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Woods has served as a coach in his professional career.
