PRESTON — One week from today, votes will be cast in a special election to determine if the Preston and East Central school districts should merge.

The single question ballot will ask voters to respond “yes” or “no” to the question, “shall Preston Community School District and East Central Community School District be reorganized and consolidated at Easton Valley Community school district as described?”

A simple majority will determine if the two districts should merge.

The petition to hold the special election was filed by the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency after holding a public hearing in June 16, 2010.

The Jackson County Auditor’s Office expects an unusually high turnout next Tuesday. As of last Thursday the Jackson County Auditor’s Office had already received 340 votes.  Around 3,000 residents are eligible to vote in the special election

Voters can request an absentee ballot until Sept. 7 and early voting is available at the auditor’s office in Maquoketa until Sept. 10.

Those in the Preston Community School District will cast ballots at Community Hall, 52 W. Gillette St., Preston.

Those in the East Central Community School District in Iowa, Van Buren and Washington Townships, and the City of Miles in Jackson County as well as qualified residents in Deep Creek Township in Clinton County will vote at Miles City Hall, 430 Ferry Road, Miles.

All qualified residents of Union Township and the City of Sabula in Jackson County as well as those in Elk River Township in Clinton County will vote at Sabula City Hall, 411 Broad St., Sabula.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 11.

If the merger is approved, the district will need to be consolidated by August 2013.
